Training Tips

To have a safe and enjoyable walk, it is essential that you physically train during the months leading up to the event. Many walkers tell us their energy and discipline increase exponentially as they train for this event. Training consistently will not only get your body in shape, it will get your life in shape.

Hosted Training Walks

Here’s your chance to lace up your shoes and train for Challenge Walk MS!

These training walks are scheduled to be 10+ miles in length. At each of these walks there will be Chapter staff and volunteers present to support your walk. These walks are also a great time to receive more information about Challenge Walk MS and get personalized advice/training tips from fitness experts.

Each training walk has an open start time. Walk the entire training route (or as much as you wish to do); enjoy a bite to eat after the walk; and receive some great training and health-related information. Please email the Challenge Walk MS team at CapitalChallengeWalkMS@nmss.org if you would like to RSVP for one of these training walks.

Local Walking Trails

Below is a list of walking trails as you train for Challenge Walk MS. If you have a favorite walking area that you would like to add to this list, please email CapitalChallengeWalkMS@nmss.org with your suggestion. We are always looking to add to this list.

Here are some of MS is BS Team's favorite walking routes:

  • Park at Fletcher's Boathouse in D.C., off of Canal Road, and walk on either the canal or on the shady, tree-lined Capital Crescent Trail. MS is BS Team walks 6 to 10 miles along this route but the distance can vary.
  • Park near the US Marine Corps War Memorial (sometimes casually called the Iwo Jima Memorial) on North Meade Street or North Nash Street in Arlington, and walk across Memorial Bridge to the U.S. Capitol and back (8 miles total) or along the river to the Key Bridge (4.5 miles total).
  • Park at Peirce Mill in D.C., and walk through Rock Creek Park into the National Zoo (about 5 miles if you walk up the big hill in the zoo and back).
